Budget 2024: Major Investments for Indigenous Reconciliation and Equity

Budget 2024 laid out sweeping investments to support Indigenous communities across education, housing, and economic development—signaling a commitment to reconciliation and opportunity.

On April 23, 2024, the federal government unveiled Budget 2024—with a theme of “Fairness for Every Generation”—featuring historic investments to advance Indigenous inclusion:

Nearly C$243 million allocated for First Nations post-secondary education, building on C$487.5 million pledged in 2019 for Inuit and Métis programs.

A C$5 billion Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program to facilitate capital access for Indigenous-led economic development and resource stewardship.

Over C$918 million for Indigenous housing and infrastructure across communities:

C$426 million for on-reserve First Nations

C$62 million for modern treaty First Nations

C$370 million for Inuit communities

C$60 million for Métis communities

The budget also included national housing acceleration plans to build 3.87 million new homes by 2031, a renters’ bill of rights, and broader social investments—like child care, universal pharmacare, and dental care. These measures represented a decisive step toward equitable development and inclusion for Indigenous peoples.
